Study: Sperm Viability in Human Semen Specimens Stored at 5C Using the Bio-Tranz System

A study of sperm viability (lifetime) when fresh samples are mixed with TEST-Yolk Buffer (TYB) and stored at 5 degrees Celsius in the Bio-Tranz shipper for extended periods.

This article was authored primarily by Panayiotis Zavos, who also developed and markets the Bio-Tranz semen shipper product, and runs a variety of fertility-related businesses including ZDL Inc.

The paper compares sperm viability after 24 hours for two samples, one mixed with TYB and cooled to 5 degrees C, and the other left as-is at 21 degrees C (room temperature).  The cooled sample was then re-warmed, and the two samples compared.

The study concludes that the sperm mixed with TYB had almost the same level of motility after 24 hours as it did at the start, demonstrating the life-extending effect of the TYB and the cool temperature storage.  Motility and other sperm characteristics in the unmixed and uncooled sample were much lower than the mixed/cooled sample.
